The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), it will be recalled, came down hard on the newly-formed Africa Basketball League (ABL), a body, which is organizing a parallel league in the country.

The NBBF, in a statement, said: “The attention of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, the sole competent governing body of basketball in Nigeria, has been drawn to the unauthorised take-off of an unapproved basketball league in Lagos going by the name “African Basketball League” organised by a group calling itself Africa Sports and Entertainment Management Company Limited (ASEMC).”

While the unresolved issue raging, Ayodele Bakare, the experienced basketball coach, speaking via his Facebook page, warned that if the issue is not handled well, the game will be the biggest loser. He however urged for peace.

“The ABL is a worthy initiative, which must never be allowed to die because of the entertainment value, dynamism and innovations which it brings to our basketball landscape.
“The NBBF, on the other hand, is the umbrella body and a stabilising rock of Nigerian Basketball, which must neither be desecrated nor put to shame.

“The two bodies must exercise caution in order not to jeopardise the development of the game in the country.”
