The acting Director General of the proposed Maritime Security Agency (NASECA), Captain Ovweghre Jacob has appealed to the Federal Government to expedite action on the process of passing the bill establishing the new security agency into law.

Captain Jacob made the appeal on the occasion of the national test parade of the agency at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, recently.

According to the acting DG, the importance of the agency in terms of employment generation, providing   clear direction in the establishment of a platform for national maritime security and generating income for government by stopping pipelines vandals, illegal bunkering and sea pirates are too numerous to be ignored by the federal government.

He stated that the bill if passed will enable the agency to partner with other security organisations to fight the menace of pipeline vandalism, poaching, piracy and the wanton destruction of power and petroleum installation.

Captain Jacob maintained that Nigeria is not the only country with maritime security agency as Pakistan, Russia, Ghana, Chile and the USA all have the agency in place to support other government security organs adding that the terrorist bombing of the World Trade Centre in the U.S on September 11th, 2001 completely raised the security consciousness of many countries in the world over.
