Farmers in Nasarawa State have appealed to Governor Tanko Al-Makura to ensure early distribution of fertilisers and other farm inputs to them to boost food production.

They made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Keffi, Keffi Local Government area of the state.

According to them, timely distribution of fertilisers to farmers would not only boost food production but also fight hunger and increase the revenue base of the farmers.

Mr David Monday, a farmer, said that the importance of early distribution of fertilisers to the farmers in the state could not be over-emphasised.

“Agriculture does not only provide food, it fights poverty, hunger, unemployment.

“It also improves the revenue base of the country; it improves the standard of living of farmers as well as the socio-economic development of the country.

“I want to appeal to the state government to ensure timely and early distribution of fertilisers and others farm inputs to the farmers,” Monday said

Mr Mohammed Isah, another farmer, explained that late distribution of fertilisers to farmers has always affected the production of crops.

Isah said that early distribution of fertilisers to the farmers would not only boost food production but will also improve revenue.

He, however, commended the state Governor for providing the farmers in the state with fertilisers at the subsidised rate in the 2014 cropping season.

Another farmer in Keffi, Mr Attah Andrew, told NAN that early distribution of fertilisers to farmers was more advantageous.

“Most of us the farmers cannot afford to buy fertilisers at the market price, that is why we are appealing to Governor Al-Makura to provide us with fertiliser at subsidised price early enough to boost harvest in the state,” he said.
