MTV Is Relegating Nigerians To The Background

It is great that international media outfit, Viacom has decided to make Africa its next conquest. If nothing, at least Nigerians will be thoroughly entertained. Even before they started making contents solely for Africa, their stations MTV, BET and Nickelodeon, amongst others have been a staple of many especially in Nigeria.

Though there were fears especially among local content providers when they landed, now their fears are allayed as many African content providers are holding their own. Also, they are well grounded and understand the unique needs of Africans – something Viacom will have to learn from scratch.

However, those who seem to be losing out in the Viacom incursion are Nigerians. Yes we are entertained but our egos are bruised. In a bid to create content to suit Africans, MTV has relegated Nigerians to the background while exalting our South African counterparts. This is not going down well with a lot of Nigerians.D' Banj and Pearl Thusi

MTV has adapted two of the international shows for Africa in recent times. The shows Ridiculousness and Lip Sync Battle are one of the most watched MTV creations of all time. They are up there with Bevis and Butthead and Pimp My Ride. But when it comes to making them for Africa, Nigerians are slighted even when we have a thriving entertainment industry with big African stars.

Ridiculousness is a show where funny videos from the internet are shown while the host, the guests and co-hosts make funny comments about them. The African version is exactly the same. The main host is South Africa’s Thomas Gumede while Boity Thulo and Nigeria’s Basket Mouth are co-host.

The part Basketmouth is playing is same as what Steelo Brim does in the International version. He has a side job of playing, rewinding and pausing the video from a console. With the experience and star power of Basket Mouth one would have thought he would be the first choice for MTV to play the lead on the show.

Nigeria was also relegated to back in the show Lip Sync Battle Africa. The show is a competition between celebrities who lip syncs their favourites songs while the viewers choose their winner. The show again is hosted by South Africa’s Pearl Thusi while our own mega superstar D’Banj is relegated to make light comments from behind.

It is true that both shows will be good on the CV of both Basketmouth and D’Banj, for Nigerians it seems like we are not ripe enough to host an MTV show, we have to play second fiddle to South Africans.

Probably the ratings of both shows in Nigeria will tell Viacom and MTV that Nigerians have their own pride and so, they should consider putting us as lead in their subsequent shows.
