Three members of a four-man gang were at the weekend rounded up and beaten to a pulp by an angry mob in the Swali axis of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, for allegedly stealing N3 million from a couple, Mr. and Mrs. Eric Oyibodokoye.

The identities of the suspects were given as Aya Victor, 23, Ebi Godwin, 20, Ejike Igwe and Jeff, whose surname could not be ascertained.

It was gathered that the bandits operated a Volkswagen car with registration number AL 305 AGU with which they trailed their target to carry out the robbery.

According to reports, they blocked the tricycle carrying the Oyibodokoyes along the Ox-Bow area and shot the driver in the head before carting away the money and zooming off.

However, luck ran out on them as they were apprehended and beaten up by the angry mob who eventually notified the police.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Command, Asinim Butswat, said the suspects “were badly beaten before the arrival of the policemen,” who arrested them.

He said that the tricycle driver and the suspects were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa,  for treatment.

“One of the suspects, Jeff, later died. His corpse was deposited at the same hospital for autopsy.

“The fourth suspect was trailed and arrested at Swali community in possession of a locally made pistol and N144,500, part of the stolen money,” Butswat said.

While soliciting the support of the police in the fight against crime, the police spokesperson urged members of the public not to take the law into their hands by beating suspects.
