Lagos – The Ministry of Youth and Sports has dropped golf from the forthcoming 2016 National Youth Games scheduled for Ilorin, Kwara State owing to paucity of funds.

Taiwo Oriss, Secretary, Nigeria Golf Federation (NGF), confirmed to Independent during the week that golf was not among the 22 sports the Ministry has decided would feature at the Games.

Commenting on the Games scheduled for September 22-30, the Secretary said, “It is sad that golf will not feature in the Youth Games; the Ministry said that there is no money and golf is one of the sports that have to be sacrificed.”

On the implication of not featuring golf in the festival the Secretary said, “The Youth Games was supposed to be an avenue for the upcoming golfers to showcase their skills.

“Secondly the Youth Games are usually an avenue to discover talents and an opportunity for the kids to be exposed, but when they are denied these opportunities, it becomes a problem as their performance and progress therefore cannot be measure,” the Secretary said.

Athletes under the age of 16 years from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will participate in the Games as cricket will feature as demonstration sports.
