A middle-aged man in Anambra State, names withheld, has been remanded in police custody for allegedly planning to kill a retired secondary school principal, Chief Boniface Okonkwo, with poison.

The accused, who hails from Okija in the Ihiala Local Government area of Anambra State, allegedly solicited the services of a lady to poison Okonkwo, who is from the same village with him, for a fee of N1 million.

He was said to have instructed the lady to poison the food of Okonkwo at an eatery in Okija where he and the lady had arranged to enjoy themselves.

After series of discussions, the accused insisted that the woman must swear an oath not to disclose that he was the person that prepared the concoction.

Feeling dismayed, the lady alerted Mr. Okonkwo of the plot and he (Okonkwo) persuaded her to accompany him to the police station to lodge a report.

After the report at the Special Armed Robbery Squad (SARS) unit in Ihiala, the lady was instructed to play along with her man.

Following further discussions, the accused and the lady agreed to meet at Okija Junction along the Onitsha –Owerri expressway for her to swear to an oath of secrecy to assure him that she would never disclose their mission.

When the woman informed the police of the agreed date and time, some policemen took positions near the agreed venue and the accused arrived with the poison.

He thereafter made some incantations and instructed her on how to apply the poison in Okonkwo’s food.

Just as he was handing the poison to the lady to use on Okonkwo’s food, the police arrested him while he was still holding the concoction.

He was later transferred to the SARS headquarters, Awkuzu, where he has been on interrogation.

Officer in charge of SARS in Anambra State, Mr. James Nwafor, said investigation into the matter was ongoing, adding that the arrested man would face the full weight of law if found guilty.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the accused person has dragged Okonkwo to Ihiala High Court for alleged infringement on his fundamental human rights.

The case has been adjourned to July 28, 2015 for hearing.
