The National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB) has called for the extension of Rural Financial Institution Building Programme (RUFIN) by 10 years.

Treasurer of RUFIN, Ms Frances Bekey, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lafia.

Bekey was speaking on the sideline of a training workshop on “Rural Business Plan for Microfinance Institutions’’ organised by the association.

Bekey said RUFIN had been fully established in rural areas now, saying that it was time for it to make maximum impact.

“RUFIN should be extended for the next 10 years because this is the time to implement what has been installed all these years.

“RUFIN has done relatively well in spite of some constraints and I wish the programme will be extended because they have now subdued the challenges.

“Stopping it now will make some people to begin the work already done from the scratch,’’ she said.

Speaking on the workshop, Bekey said that its major objective was to prepare Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) to have outreach in the rural communities.

She said that participants were enlightened on the success stories in other countries, how to reach out to rural communities by learning how to develop and implement the rural business plan.

Bekey said that NAMB had put down processes to carry on after RUFIN by installing services that would cut cost like the Bank Verification Number (BVM) platform for members.

She said NAMB now has a training institute responsible for continuing the trainings of RUFIN, empowering members, sharing knowledge and installing best practices.
