Federal Government says it has concluded plans to establish 60 agricultural hiring equipment centres across the country to boost food production through mechanisation.

Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sonny Echono, dropped this hint, on Wednesday in Abuja, while receiving the reports of four committees set up by the Ministry in various agricultural related fields.

Echono said with the establishment of the 60 more agricultural equipment hiring centres, the total of number of the centres would rise to 140 across the country.

He stated that each of the Centres under consideration would have tractors, tillers, harvesters, and full complement of mechanised farming equipment to ensure that farmers have improved productivity.

Assuring farmers that the equipment would be subsidized by the government, Echono added that a proposal to that effect had been presented to the President Mohammed Buhari while arrangement for the trade-off in October/November is being worked out.

He explained the Federal Government’s inability to continue with the implementation of the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) Scheme in this farming season, adding that the agricultural equipment hiring centres would make up the losses incurred by famers due to non-implementation of GES.

Echono further revealed that the Ministry was working tirelessly to float four marketing corporations in collaboration with the private sector.
