Chelsea forward, Didier Drogba has added to the massive charity work he undertakes in his homeland with the opening of the first of five hospitals that he is currently working to open in Cote D’Ivoire.

The hospital is a $1 million facility in a district in the capital, Abidjan called Attecoube, and it will focus on medical care and treatment for the less fortunate who cannot afford more expensive healthcare.

Known for his philanthropic nature and the love and care he has for the people of his native Cote D’Ivoire, the Chelsea player and former national team captain is planning to open a further four hospitals in four other cities, namely Yamoussoukro, San Pedro, Man and Korhogo, as part of the work that he does through the Didier Drogba Foundation.

According to Guy Roland Tanoh, the secretary of Didier Drogba Foundation, the facility is well equipped, with facilities which include an ultrasound room, a maternal and child protection unit, an x-ray section, an very modern laboratory, a well-stocked pharmacy and hospitalization and isolation wards for a variety of illnesses.

The Cote D’Ivoire legend’s foundation is set to host a gala event in London on April 18 to raise funds for this hospital and the other planned medical facilities.

The new hospital is expected to treat around 50,000 patients per year in the Ivorian capital, with the four remaining facilities scheduled to open in the coming months. These will be an excellent addition to the healthcare environment in Drogba’s homeland.

Drogba has also confirmed that he will include Namibia in his annual fundraising initiative.

The football superstar says Namibia is very close to his heart. He visited the capital in November 2014 when he spent time with Windhoek Lager, meeting fans and also accommodated a meet-and-greet at the NBL head office to meet with staff.

“Didier Drogba is a world-class African hero and his passion to give back to African people resonates with us. As a brand, we admire the values he stands for and his commitment to his people that are less privileged,” said Rose Shippiki, one of his fans.
