More than 4,000 people were left homeless after a fire engulfed a residential area in the Philippine capital, a district fire marshal said on Thursday.

Eastern Manila Fire Marshal, Samuel Tadeo, told newsmen eight people were injured late Wednesday in the fire that razed hundreds of houses in the district of Addition Hills of Mandaluyong.

“All the injured are being treated at nearby hospitals for contusions and minor burns and are in stable condition,” He said.

Tadeo said the fire had spread quickly in the neighbourhood, partly because of a strong breeze, adding that the cause of the fire was still unknown.

“Narrow streets and lack of fire hydrants in the area have hampered our firefighting operations,” he said.

An Air force helicopter was used to help put out the blaze, Tadeo added.

The people displaced by the fire were being housed in five nearby evacuation centres
