LAGOS – Ogadima Nkwaha and John Effiong are childhood friends, who used to rock Ajegunle, a Lagos suburb for years.

But today, Effiong is dead allegedly killed by no other person than his beloved friend, Nkwaha in connection with a N60, 000 gambling deal gone soured.

The build-up to this messy incident began two days ago when Nkwaha, a 21-year old commercial motorcycle operator, popularly known as okada rider slit the throat of Effiong while they were fighting over a phone after gambling.

The police in Lagos said the suspect had won more than N60, 000 from the victim, while they gambled and in his bid to recoup his losses, the deceased reportedly wagered his handset.

The dictionary says wagering is “an agreement between two people that whoever loses a bet on an uncertain outcome will pay the other a specific amount or another form of compensation”

The incident, which occurred at Kumuyi Street in Ajegunle, Apapa Lagos, threw the residents of the famous jungle city to pandemonium.

But the deceased refused to part with his N60, 000 phone, which resulted in an argument between the duo and Nkwaha was said to have grabbed a beer bottle, smashed it on the floor and slit the throat of his bossom friend.

Effiong was however rushed to a private hospital in Ajegunle where he eventually died.

Dolapo Badmus, police image maker for Lagos confirmed the incident adding that Effiong’s corpse had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy.

According to Badmus, a superintendent of police, “we have a case involving one Ogadima Nkwaha, who allegedly stabbed one Effiong on the neck with a broken bottle during a fight between them”.

She said that “the victim’s corpse has been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, while the suspect is in custody.”
