Man Dies In Bayelsa Police, Cultists Clash

A young man was feared dead in Bayelsa State was reportedly killed during exch gunfire between  members of a group suspected to be cultists and a team of policemen at Ovom area of the state capital,Yenagoa.

It was gathered that the victim identified as Blessing Amakiri from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state was hit by a stray bullet during the incident which occurred at 4:30pm on Tueday.

Amakiri, who was said to be visiting the area, died on the spot and his body was abandoned by the police although they returned later to take away the corpse.

It was not however clear if the stray bullet was from the police or that of a cultist. Residents in the area were said to have gone into hiding in the wake of the gunfire.  It was learnt that the policemen mobilised from ‘A’ Division of the state police command at Ovom.

The policemen were said to have stormed the area to arrest a suspect when the suspected cultists allegedly accosted them and asked to them to leave and started pelting them with missiles.

A senior police officer who is believed to be the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) arrived the area immediately the crisis started. He was said to have ordered the policemen to go after the suspected cultists and that sparked off the shootings.

When contacted over the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Asinim Butswat, said the incident occurred when the police were responding to a distress call on clash between rival cult groups, Icelanders and Greenlanders.

Butswat said the corpse of Amakiri was identified by his mother and has been deposited in the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa while investigations were ongoing.
