A 60-year-old man is now  cooling his heels in the cells of Plateau State Police Command for allegedly setting an eight-year-old girl ablaze on suspicion of being a witch.

The incident occurred at Sabon Layi community in the Barkin Ladi Local Government area of the state.

The suspect, identified as Yakubu Vong, was said to have lured the girl, Nancy Dauda, to a  house where he allegedly poured petrol on her and set her ablaze, claiming that she was a witch.

An uncle to Nancy, James Bamu, who was very angry over the incident, told newsmen on in Jos, the state capital, that the girl was innocent of the accusation against her, asking the man that set her ablaze to produce a proof that the girl is indeed a witch.

He described the act of Vong as barbaric and demanded that the wrath of the law should be visited on him to serve as deterrent to others who practice such evil act.

According to him, when the girl was rushed to the hospital she couldn’t make it because she had been severely burnt.

In his reaction, Plateau State Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Abu, confirmed the incident, describing the situation as sad.

Abu warned that no one was above the law and people should desist from taking the law into their hands.

He added that the suspect was already in police custody and investigations into the matter had begun.
