FOR President Muhammadu Buhari to achieve the needed change and his promise of providing access to qualitative and affordable health care services to all Nigerians, health insurance must be made mandatory.

This will eliminate out of pocket expenses and also reduce the sufferings most less privileged Nigerians go through at the point of receiving health care services.

The immediate past Commissioner for Health in Rivers State, Sampson Parker, stated this in an interview with journalists in Abuja, on Tuesday June 1, 2015.

According to him: “The economic resources in the country are dwindling by the day and health care dwindles as well, therefore we should be thinking how we can prevent such re-occurrences if we bounce back from economic misfortune and revive healthcare as it should be.”

He, however recalled that “Our former governor had the political will to push free health care in Rivers State, but nobody told us that in 2013/14 our internally generated revenue and allocations from the federal government will drop to less than 50 per cent. We could not sustain it.”

“The reason is because, healthcare is for the people, it is not for the government. The people should manage their health care services themselves.

“That means that people should fund their health care services by themselves.”
