Man, 34, Docked Over Alleged Visa Scam

A 34-year-old man, Gbenga Martins, who allegedly obtained N3 million from a visa seeker in the pretext of procuring the travel document for him, was arraigned in an Ikorodu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Thursday.

Martins, who resides at Ishawo Road in Ikorodu, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of obtaining under false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Abosede Adegeshin, told the court that the accused committed the offences in June 2013 at No.115 Ishawo Road, Owutu, Ikorodu.

Adegeshin said that the accused fraudulently obtained the sum from one Segun Okeowo, claiming he would procure a Canadian visa for him.

The accused had since 2013 been avoiding the complainant, but was later arrested by the police on Oct. 4,’’ he said.

Adegeshin said that the offences contravened Section 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The Magistrate, Mr.O.O.Olatunji granted the accused bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Olatunji ordered that the sureties must be a civil servant resident in Ikorodu and must also show evidence of five years tax payment.

He adjourned the case till Nov. 5 for further hearing.
