Chief Lawson Omokhodion, the Akoamen of Ekpoma and one of those nominated by MEND as member of its negotiating team with the Federal Government, has declined membership of the team.

In a signed statement made available to Independent, Omokhodion stated that though he was contacted by a person he holds dear and has respect for as Edo State representative on the Aaron2 negotiating team proposed by MEND to dialogue with the Federal Government on how to secure a peaceful Niger Delta region, which he had initially agreed to, he has changed his mind and has come out to decline his membership.

In his initial acceptance, he had made it clear that he neither knew MEND nor the Avengers and that he will not endure the destruction of national assets in the name of militancy.

He claimed that he agreed on the basis that if the negotiation was acceptable to the Federal Government, he would gladly be part of it.

“I also made it abundantly clear that the terms of reference of the engagement would enable me take a final position on the nomination,” he said, adding that several days had passed since he was contacted but had not been availed of the terms of reference and the discussion framework.

“Several days have passed since I was contacted but the terms of reference and discussion framework for the MEND Aaron2 negotiating team are still not available.

“I, therefore, believe that the lapse in time has rendered my nomination on the negotiating team nugatory”, he noted.

He said that as a pacifist, he believes that every move to bring peace to any geographical zone of the country is good intended and should be encouraged.

“I, therefore, wish MEND well in their effort to secure peace and quiet in the Niger Delta region. It is certain that Nigeria needs peace for a true and sustainable economic and political transformation,” he noted.

He concluded that in view of the foregoing circumstances he has decided to decline his nomination as part of MEND Aaron2 negotiating team.
