As part of his efforts to alleviate the suffering of his people, Hon. Sulaimon Lasun Yussuff, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has commenced the roll-out of his empowerment programme aimed improving the lives of his constituents with the donation of items worth over N50 million.
The empowerment scheme which began over three months ago, according to a statement issued by Mr. Wole Oladimeji, his Chief Press Secretary, was officially launched recently with the distribution of various items to make the people self-reliant and self-sustained.
The items distributed on the occasion were 100 Tricycle popularly called, ‘keke’, 100 sewing machines, 100 grinding machines and N6 million take-off grants to beneficiaries to enable the aged women start something meaningful.
Explaining the reason behind the scheme, the Deputy Speaker said that he believed in the equitable distribution of wealth and the only way to achieve this, is by teaching people how to fish and not by giving them fish all the time.
He said that the items were distributed among the people in the four local government areas of Irepodun/Orolu/Olorunda/Osogbo that make up Irepodun federal constituency of Osun State.
“Apart from giving the young ones employment, I decided to give the old women who are committed to APC money to start small businesses; others are given sewing machines and grinding machines while the men are given tricycles,” he said.
The Deputy Speaker explained that the people are stakeholders who invested in politics and it is compulsory for them to reap from their investment.
“It is a payback time, they are entitled to anything that is given to them, it is a reward for attending political meetings and to encourage them to do more.
“The empowerment scheme is an ongoing thing, so after the constituency, it would be extended to other areas so that nobody would be marginalised; it is way of compensating the people on their efforts so far,” he stated.
