Lagos Teachers Defy Rain to Celebrate World Teachers’ Day

Teachers in Lagos State under the umbrella body of the Academic Staff
Union of Secondary Schools of Nigeria (ASUSS) and Basic Education
Staff Union of Nigeria (BESUN) on Monday October 5 defied the early morning showers
to mark this year’s World Teachers Day (WTD),

At the Nigerian Army Officers’ Mess, Tabs, Lagos, venue of the event,
President, ASUSS Lagos State chapter, Comrade Kazeem Labaika, said the
day was significant to examine the roles teachers are expected to play
in the new education agenda.

Speaking on the theme of the 2015 celebration, “Empowering. Teachers,
Building Sustainable Societies” , Comrade Labaika described it as apt
considering the projected shortage of teachers whose global figure
stood at 12.6 million.

He lamented that is this figure, Lagos state had a shortage of about
11,300 teachers to fill existing vacancies in the 1,007 primary

However, the ASUSS Lagos state chapter president commended governor
Akinwunmi Ambode who recently gave approval for the  employment of.
1,300 teachers.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of gifts and cash rewards
in the tune of N10 million to 60 retired teachers in the state.

Each of the retirees received cheque of N100, 000 each as token in
addition to decoration as senior citizens of Nigeria as mark of
respect for honour and dedication.
