Residents of Isheri-Berger, a border community between Ifo local government area of Ogun state and Lagos, seem to be living in fear over a hotel, suspected to be meeting point of criminals.

Daily Independent gathered that the hotel, (names withheld) located on Agbedina Street in Isheri-Berger, is alleged to be a hideout for suspected criminals, rapists, area boys, drug addicts and others.

According to Emeka Smith, (not real names); a resident of the area said that “residents of Isheri-Berger have been living in perpetual fear, not so sure of their fate, as suspected criminals have formed the habits of always meeting at the hotel daily”.

Emeka, a journalist further disclosed that it has been observed by some residents that persons of questionable characters, who meet at the hotel, are always fond of mixing the beer they buy with codeine syrup before taking it. This, the suspects boast do make them high, bold and daring.

A female restaurant operator, whose shop is located near Isheri police station, further confirmed the presence of suspected criminals at the hotel, when she said that “the place is a no-go area for residents of Isheri-Berger, especially in the night and on weekends”.

However, when our correspondent visited the hotel on Monday, it was observed that the hotel looks abandoned and unkempt, even as some youths, obviously dead drunk, were seen loitering around the hotel premises and charting away, unconcerned.

Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Police Command, Kenneth Nwosu, could not be reached on phone, Monday for official comment on the issue.

But, a police officer at Isheri police station, who spoke off records, boasted “that the police in the area have a firm grip on security situations in the border community”.

Remember, Isheri-Berger is a border community between Lagos and Ogun state and as such, it is under closer watch by police officers from the two states, who work in cordial partnership”, the officer said.
