The Lagos State Police Command on Thursday assured that the withdrawal of checkpoints on the roads would not in any way affect its primary responsibility of protecting lives and property.

The command’s spokesman, Kenneth Nwosu, who gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said measures were being taken against all black spots.

NAN reports that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, had ordered the withdrawal of police checkpoints from the roads nationwide.

Nwosu said the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, had already launched “Operation Safer Highways” aimed at addressing security challenges in the state.

“You know we have launched the Operation Safer Highways now and the day the CP was launching it, he said the essence of the operation was to fill in the gap created by the withdrawal of policemen based on the Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase’s directive.

“The operation safer highways officials are all on duty now, covering every part of the state; so I want to assure Lagosians that there is nothing to fear,” he said.

Nwosu said the police are working round the clock to ensure that Lagos was conducive for business without fear of any threat or molestation.
