‘’Lagos Calls Me ‘Kobokobo’, Delta Help!’’

JUST when one thinks that Father of Nigerian movies (Nollywood), Chief Eddy Ugbomah, has stepped aside from controversies issues for obvious reasons, he shocks one the more. Perhaps it is inborn, many say.

Over the years, the former boss of the Nigerian Film Corporation, Founder, Movies Hall of Fame, Chairman Board of Trustees of the Actors Guild of Nigeria and Directors Guild of Nigeria (DGN), Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Special Adviser, National Film and Video Censors Board etc and brain behind many box office movies, has never failed to hit the nail on the head without caring whose ox is gored.

This time around, however, the Lagos State-born thespian who hails from Delta State, is embittered that despite all his contributions in the country’s make-believe industry, he has not been duly honoured outside the OON plaque.

‘’I was born in Obalende and grew up in Lafiaji but they say I’m ‘koboko’ and so there is nothing for me in Lagos state. But tell me, which of its past and present governors is more Lagosian than me?’’ he thundered.

Eddy is one of the achievers that will be honoured by the Silverbird group in its impending awards ceremony next month and to him, ‘’it is a challenge to Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, my state governor, to equally honour, celebrate and appreciate one of Delta’s special sons. I mean, he cannot deny me like Lagos does.’’

The ‘Black Gold’ movie producer believes that it is better late than never. For many decades, the top Delta chief has received accolades from different quarters for ‘’doing it right’’ in the industry and so ‘’I would like my state governor to be present on that day and cheer as I receive the Silverbird award to douse the saying that a prophet is never known in his town.’’
