Lagos Budget For Education Almost One-Third Of Federal – Ambode

Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, Governor of Lagos State, has affirmed that the N113.3 billion state’s budgetary allocation for education representing 17.11 per cent of the state’s budget was about one-third of the N369 billion the Federal Government budgeted and more than one-third of the N300 billion budgeted for the same purpose by the 17 Northern states of the Federation.
Ambode spoke at the grand finale of activities marking the Year 2016 Children’s Day at the Nigeria Police College Parade Ground on Friday.
The governor who was represented at the event by Dr. Oluranti Adebule, his Deputy, spoke on the theme of the celebration, “Stop Violence Against Children.”
He promised that anyone who perpetrates violence against children in any form be it physical, sexual, psychological, deliberate neglect, kidnap and child trafficking would be dealt with according to the law.
He assured the children that, he shares in their vision for a very bright future and urged them to up the scale of their academic performance by preparing very well ahead of all examinations and shun examination malpractices because it is not only criminal and immoral, but kills career when caught.
The governor also said it was noteworthy that while the percentage of students who passed with 5 credits including Mathematics and English in WASSCE has increased from 17.40 per cent in 2011 to 41.06 per cent in 2015, he was expecting a better result from the SS3 students in the just concluded WASSCE.
Ambode commended the improvement in the education sector as exemplified by the results of the various curricular activities locally and internationally and noted that it had been a source of joy to the state government.
Earlier, Adesina Odeyemi, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, reminded students that education remained the veritable means of attaining greatness.
He said that education helps to prepare individuals for life challenges, added that there was need for them to strive hard to make parents and entire community happy through their performances.
