The Lagos State House of Assembly has set up an Ad hoc committee to investigate the cause of the death of an official of the state Fire Service, Olumide Ogunubi, while trying to save a man in distress.

The committee, which was constituted by the Speaker of the House, Mudasiru Obasa, is headed by the Deputy Chief Whip, Omotayo Oduntan, with Saka Solaja (Ikorodu 2), Sola Giwa (Lagos Island 2), Rotimi Olowo and Funmilayo Tejuosho (Mushin 1) as other members of the committee.

The House has also called on the state government to come up with an amendment to the law that set up the state Fire Service, with a view of reviewing the law to make it meet up with the current standard and practice.

Segun Olulade, who is representing Epe Constituency 2, had raised the matter under Matter of Urgent Public Importance, during Tuesday’s plenary, informing his colleagues that the fire fighter, who was attached to Ikotun Fire Service station, met his untimely death, while trying to save a plumber, who was digging a well.

According to Olulade, Ogunubi went to attend to an emergency and the belt he used to tie himself to the well cut off leading to his untimely death.

“If it is not well investigated, it would affect the morale of fire fighters in the state and in the country. He died in active service.

“We should call on the state government to upgrade the fire service equipment in the state and update the Fire Service Law of 1972,” he said.
