An unidentified manual labourer has died after he was bitten by a snake at the Enugu State House of Assembly complex.

The tragic incident was said to have occurred on Wednesday afternoon.

It was gathered that the labourer who hailed from Abakiliki in Ebonyi State and his colleagues were brought from “Ogbo Mmanu”, a popular hub for manual labourers in Enugu, to clear the thick grasses that had taken over the House of Assembly complex.

The Director of Administration in the House, Linus Nebo, was said to have facilitated the deal.

According to eye-witness, while the labourers were clearing the overgrown grasses, they suddenly encountered a snake and frantically attempted to kill it.

One of the labourers was said to have inflicted a deep cut on the head of the snake, and it convulsed in pain for some minutes and remained still.

Thinking that the snake was dead, the labourers returned to their job, but before they knew it, the wounded snake moved swiftly and attacked one of them, biting him.

The victim screamed in pain and fell on the ground, shouting for help.

The other labourers immediately pounced on the wounded snake and finished it off before it could cause more damage.

One of our sources at the House of Assembly said the victim of the snake bite was still breathing when he was taken away from the Assembly complex.

It was gathered that he was rushed to Parklane General Hospital Enugu but as his condition continued deteriorating, he was relocated to one herbal home at Ugwuaji, a suburb of Enugu metropolis.

The labourer died at the herbal home a few hours after he was brought there as the paltry N11, 000 brought by the House of Assembly was inadequate to save his life.

The incident has thrown the entire Enugu House of Assembly into apprehension, with the staff now afraid of entering their offices.

A male staff of the House of Assembly who pleaded anonymity blamed the incident on the lack of fumigation of the House of Assembly premises, which has remained bushy since the inception of the era of the current House led by Edward Ubosi as Speaker.

Our source said on one occasion, he killed a snake in his office while on another occasion a dead snake was seen on the corridor to the office of top administrative staff of the House.

“We have been complaining about the bushy state of the House premises, but nobody has cared to do anything. Now, that it has claimed somebody’s life, may be, they will do something now,” he said.

Spokesman of Enugu State Police Command, DSP Ebere Amaraizu, has confirmed the incident.

Amaraizu said: “Yes, the name of the victim is yet to be known but further information revealed that he is a casual worker.”

When contacted, the Chairman of House Committee on Information, Paul Nnajiofor, denied that such incident occurred in the House.

“I am not aware of such incident. In fact, it is not true,” Nnajiofor said.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that kinsmen of the deceased have taken his remains to his country home in Abakiliki, Ebonyi State for burial.
