Former Presidential Adviser on Niger-Delta Affairs and immediate past chairman of Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Kingsley Kuku had urged President Mommandu Buhari not to be in rush in appointing someone who will be in charge of the Niger Delta Affairs’ Ministry.

Kuku said the President must take much time to source for a credible person to head the Presidential Amnesty office in order not jeopardise the existing peace in the Niger Delta region since 2011 which has caused increase in crude oil production in the oil rich region from about 700,000 metric tonne per barrel to over 2.8 million metric tonne per day.

He spoke to newsmen in Akure over the weekend, at the 3rd Nigerian Athletic Golden (AFN) Golden League held at the Sports Complex of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) in Ondo State.

He also commended 30,000 ex-militants under the PAP for maintaining peace despite not being paid their allowances for the last two months.

According to him, “I have appealed to the delegates (the ex-militants) which I ran the office on behalf for four years and four months to be patient with the President administration on the affairs of the Niger Delta people.

“It was quiet an experience working in such office. These are groups of people former agitators that can turn the nation upside down if their payment is delay for two days, they can block the Niger delta highways and do more but for over two months they have been disciplined and calmed for a very large extent.

“For me that shows the level of discipline I was able to instill in the programme and that is what the presence administration is enjoying. We must not over stress our luck.

“However, this is a transition period for President Muhammadu Buhari’s government. It is not going to be easy for them to come on board just to announce anybody to run the affairs of the amnesty office. So it will take him for some times. I have definitely left a big shoe in that office. If you just bring anybody who put his leg there, there will be more crisis.

“So I think Mr. President is taking is time to look for what I have been able to do for four years and four months to look for appropriate person to replace me so that there won’t be destruction but continuity.

“I think there will be better time for the programme but I encourage the 30,000 delegates to continue to endure for a little while. I think Mr. President respects and adores the Niger Delta people. That is why in his inaugural address to the people of Nigeria, the Niger Delta was dwelt on”, Kuku stated.
