Lagos – Michael Isife, Chidera Nwokpor, Somto Emehelu, Mmesoma Okechukwu and Ejike Nwokpor are some school kid golfers in Enugu who have a tall dream of beating the record of Rory Mcllroy in the golf.
Independent bumped into these kids recently at the Enugu Club 1929 Sports Club Golf course displaying interesting skills in swinging and putting without guidance.
On interaction with them one after the other, it was interesting to learn that they have burning desire to take their golf ambition beyond the shores of Nigeria.
According to Isife, 13 and a JSS2 student who has participated in the NGF Zonal Youth/kids Championship, “I want to play better than Mcllroy and I’m working towards it; that’s my ambition.”
Nwokpor, a JSS3 student said, “I dream golf always and I only have to improve on my drive to achieve my dream. I want to be the new Mcllroy.”
Similarly, Somto Emehelu also a JSS3 student was unanimously voted by the kids as the player with the longest drive among them, just as he shared the same dream with his mates.
For Okechukwu and Ejike a younger brother of Chidera (Nwokpor) at 10-11 years, they have made golf a choice career.
However, these kids who are also caddies at the Enugu course complained, “One of our problems is that they don’t allow us to train sometimes. Even the time given to caddies to train the pro still chase us away.”
Sadly, they said that funding remains their major hindrance affecting their progress in the game; but it is a thing of joy that they have a course to showcase their skill at all.
“We don’t have clubs to play with; we share clubs sometimes,” they lamented.
