Asaba – In an unprecedented manner from past cases of criminal abduction in the country, Mrs. Margaret Emefiele, wife of Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele, returned to her family in less than 24 hours that she was kidnapped on Thursday.

Mrs. Emefiele’s native home at Agbor, Ika South Local Government of Delta State, was agog yesterday as news spread that she had regained her freedom from the bandits.

Mrs. Emefiele who was abducted in Ugoneki, a few miles from Benin City, Edo State, last Thursday was on her way from Lagos to her hometown in Agbor, Delta State when her convoy was attacked by heavily armed men, who overpowered her security detail.

Her abductors later established contact with her family and allegedly demanded N1.5 billion ransom.

Details of the deal struck with the kidnappers were not immediately available, but a source hinted Independent that the CBN governor working in concert with high powered security personnel insisted that everything possible must be done to secure the release of Mrs. Emefiele and others who were taken away by the criminal gang.

A family source at the husband’s residence around Dr. White street in Agbor said she and other persons taken were released yesterday morning following a massive police operation coordinated by police commissioners of Edo and Delta states.

The source confirmed that Margaret, three other women and a male driver, taken to an unknown location were set free unhurt at about 2a.m.

The source said the Delta Commissioner of Police later handed them over to Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who had also been physically involved in the coordinating efforts to free them from the abductors.

While expressing happiness over the development, the source said the family members and the entire community had been gripped with fear for the safety of Mrs. Emefiele who is widely adored as a prized daughter of the Agbor community.

“We thank God she has been released unhurt. We were afraid for her life but God has answered our prayers. We are no longer jittery and we want our sons and daughters to be coming home and not to be afraid again,’’ he pleaded.

On whether the family deliberately agreed with the security agencies to keep the report of her abduction as a result of the sensitivity of the negotiations between the family and the abductors, the source said it was better to pay ransom to safe the lives of those who were kidnapped than to refuse and lose them.

According to a source at the police headquarters in Asaba, the heavy presence of unfamiliar faces at the headquarters since Thursday was an indication that the security men were battle ready to effect release of the kidnapped persons.

Not wanting to be mentioned, the source said the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, had deployed helicopters along the Benin-Onitsha, Benin-Auchi, Benin-Warri Roads for aerial surveillance of the in a bid to apprehend the abductors.

He further said the IGP had also flooded the area with hundreds of police operatives and sniffer dogs while the IG Special Intelligence Monitoring Team, headed by Abba Kyari, had also commenced investigation into the incident.

Kyari was the officer who arrested the suspects responsible for the abduction of Prof. Kamene Okonjo, the mother of ex-Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in 2012.
