The chairman of Kids Golf International (KGI), Oba Dokun Thompson, has said that the organisation needs adequate funding and adequate coverage of its events by the media to achieve its set target of developing kid’s golf.

Oba Thompson, who made the remark in Ibadan over the weekend during the Nigerian Golf Federation (NGF) South West zonal kiddies’ championship, said that poor publicity and paucity of funds were the twin factors hindering success of the organisation.

According to him, “One of our major challenges is publicity. If we can get the media to help publicise our events then it will help solve our second challenge which is finance.

“We need the media. People need to know what is happening at KGI and by extension grow the interest in the game which will help achieve one of our set objectives.”

He also said that the organisation needs to increase its number of tournaments on yearly basis so as to help develop the kids.

“We need to at least organise one tournament every month around the country. But this involves huge finance and we don’t have that kind of money, hence we hope the media can partner with us to achieve it,” he said.

He, however, appreciated Daily Independent, The Guardian and NTA among others for their tremendous supports of KGI since its inception four years ago.

“Our kids are 9-11 years and in the next four years we hope to have some great stars, because they are doing very well,” he said.

“Jordan Spiff played in one of the US Kids tournaments four five years ago and today he is world number one making millions of dollars, such is what we are expecting from the kids at KGI and that is why we need the support of all stakeholders.”
