Former prosecution lawyer for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Festus Keyamo, has withdrawn from the case between the commission and former Governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Silva, who is standing trial for alleged financial crimes.

According to Keyamo, his withdrawal from the matter is as a result of recent developments that have made it expedient for him to withdraw from further prosecution of the said charge.

Keyamo was elected a senator on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the just-concluded general elections; Sylva is also a chieftain of the APC.

In a letter to the chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Lamorde, Keyamo said that the developments may hamper his effective, efficient and vigorous prosecution of the charge, which is a duty expected of every prosecutor.

He asked the commission to allow him to return the case files for re-assignment to another counsel for due prosecution.

Trial was fixed to commence on Monday, May 25, 2015.
