Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Governor of Kano State, has promised to pay five years outstanding students’ scholarship.

Right from the 2012 academic session, thousands of bonafide Kano students whose bursaries now run into billions of naira were not settled by the immediate past administration in the state.

The governor stated this while receiving the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, during the traditional Hawan Nassarawa homage to mark the end of Ramadan fast, at Government House, Kano.

Ganduje said the bursaries, running into billions of naira, would be paid to all those entitled to the funds as his administration was committed to doing all it can to ensure that the students are paid as soon as possible.

According to a statement by Salihu Tanko Yakasai, Director-General, Media and Communications, Government House, Kano, Ganduje said that when he took office he inherited huge liabilities of unpaid bursaries and other fees on students of the state in overseas institutions; he, however, confirmed that efforts were being made to settle the debt gradually, so that the students’ academic pursuit is not disrupted.

The governor, however, advised that, because of the present financial position of the state government, parents whose children are studying abroad should endeavor to assist their wards within their means, assuring them that government would revive its bursary scheme.

The statements said, Ganduje, enumerated efforts of his administration to “transform the state through revolutionising internally generated revenue as well as making huge investments in infrastructure, agriculture, health, job creation and sanitation, despite financial challenges.”

On his part, Sanusi, who acknowledged the achievements of the Kano State government, despite the present economic situation in the country, stressed the need for public enlightenment and support for the administration to achieve its mission and vision.

The Emir also urged the people to place more premiums on education, especially girl-child education, in view of its importance, adding that they should also be mindful of the sanitation of their environment, to avoid diseases.
