Kano Raises Panel To Monitor Fertiliser Distribution

The Kano State Government has set up a committee to ensure effective distribution of fertilisers to farmers for this year’s cropping season.

The state Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Nasiru Gawuna, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.

He said the setting up of the committee was necessary in order to check diversion of the commodity following the decision of the state government to suspend fertilisers distribution via mobile cell phone alert.

According to him, the committee will also check illegal activities of middlemen who purchase the commodity and later sell it to farmers at exorbitant prices.

“We decided to suspend the distribution of the commodity though the mobile cell phone alert because it is too late now to start that process,’’ he said.

He, however, stressed that the government had taken adequate measures to ensure that only genuine farmers get the commodity.

“Government has taken necessary measures to ensure that farmers get the commodity at the designated centres in the wards,’’ Gawuna said.

“This year, farmers are expected to buy fertilisers at a cost of N3,500 per bag, while whatever the balance may be, the state government will pay for them,’’ the commissioner added.
