The Statistician General of the Federation, Dr. Yemi Kale, has urged all tiers of government in Nigeria to give more attention and support to the improvement of official statistics to realise various reform programmes and objectives embarked upon by them.
Kale who gave the charge on Wednesday in Abuja during the African Statistics Day Celebration, said it would be hard and impossible to achieve government’s reform programmes without reliable, timely and accurate data for evidenced-based policy formulation and informed decisions.
He also maintained that it would be very difficult for government to achieve its commitments in monitoring national development, policies and programmes without a virile and efficient statistical information system in place.
He noted that the use of better statistics was critical, as it is the only way of defining clear direction for sustained development of the economy.
According to him, “ Good statistics is vital sources of evidence as they provide us with clear , objective, numerical data on all aspects of our lives and the  state of our country, including the growth and characteristics of our population, economic performance, levels of health and well-being as well as the condition of the surrounding environment.
“Without these, we cannot make well-informed decisions that will catalyse our social and economic development and transform the future generation s of Nigerians.
“It is when we are able to collate, understand, and interpret data correctly as well as develop our ability to identify key areas in our society that require change that our policy prescriptions and directions are more likely to respond to the real needs of the Nigerian economy.”
The Statistician General stressed the need to focus more attention on the use of modern technology for improved statistical delivery.
Speaking on this year’s African Statistics Day Celebration which was, “Better Data for Better Lives: Harnessing Modern Technology to Enhance National Statistical Systems,” Kale said the National Bureau of Statistics had embarked on initiatives that would help to put in place the necessary infrastructure aimed at enhancing the process of statistical production in the country.
