Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State on Friday signed the first set of digital Certificates of Occupancy produced by the state’s new Electronic Land Registry.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Kaduna, El-Rufai said that the government was making the process of securing title deeds easier for the people.

He inspected the facilities of the Kaduna Geographic Information Service (KADGIS), the agency responsible for the registration of land documents and commended the efforts made to digitise the land archive.

KADGIS was established following an executive bill presented to and passed by the state assembly, to replace the former Ministry of Lands, Survey and Country Planning,

KADGIS is expected to vastly increase the registration of land titles in the state, where most property do not have Certificates of Occupancy.

The governor said that KADGIS, as a major capital project of the government, was also expected to make significant contribution toward improving the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

He explained that by digitising land titles, the state was guaranteeing the integrity of title documents.

The governor invited residents of the state to use the services of KADGIS and obtain valid and secure title documents.

El-rufai, as FCT minister from 2003 to 2007, established the first electronic land registry in Nigeria.

The replication of the feat in Kaduna is part of the ongoing processes to modernise the state.
