Chief Ayo Opadokun, Convener of the Coalition of Democrats for Electoral Reforms (CODER), on Monday accused the media of doing the bidding of some elements in the society who have dragged the country down in the last 30 years.

He also accused journalists of being too ‘unduly sensational’ about the date given by the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu to put an end to the lingering fuel scarcity in the country.

The minister, who also doubles as the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) had earlier said the scarcity will linger till May. He later promised that the scarcity will end on or before 7th of April when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources ( Downstream ) last week.

“We expect that between now and about the 6th to 7th of April, the fuel queues will disappear, the DSDP will begin and the foreign exchange allocation will see us smoothly through the track” the minister had said.

But speaking in a chat with Independent on whether the April 7th date is realistic, Opadokun said the minister only promised to put an end to the scarcity during the second week of April.

“ Journalists are unduly sensational about this date. I listened to his speeches. At a period, he was talking about the second week in April.  So, why insisting on this so-called April 7th?”

“ I think that unwittingly, some people in the media are doing the bidding of some wrongly- headed partisans whose own group had failed us, not just in the last 16 years but have held us down in the last 30 years” he said.
