A total of 70 junior golfers will take part in the maiden edition of the Nigeria Golf Federation (N.G.F.) National Junior Golf Finals, which tees off today at the St Mark Golf and Country Club, Akpegede, Otukpo, Benue State.

The Secretary General of the Federation, Taiwo  Oriss, said on Thursday that players in the categories of U-10, U-14 and U-19 arrived on Wednesday for the championship.

“I can tell you categorically today (Thursday) that all the players that will take part in the various events have arrived Otukpo yesterday (Wednesday) for this tournament,” Oriss said.

He reiterated that the championship would be primarily for the winners from the six geo-political zones of the NGF Zonal Kiddies Clinic/Golf Championship.

“Let me clarify that only the winners in the various zonal championship competitions are eligible for the national finals. So, it is a champion of champions’ competition,” he said.

The secretary also said that logistics for the championship which will end September 6, 2015 have been put in place to ensure a hitch-free game.

In same vein, NGF Director of Youth Development, Emy Ekong, added that Key players from the zones in the number one ranking are Godsmark I from the South East; Aminu Muhammad, North West; Lucky Ede, South West and Helen Alechenu, North Central.

Also she said, “The tournament would be used to encourage the girl child at U-10 Girls special category.”

Meanwhile, the South East Zonal champion, Chiemere Isife, has vowed to win the championship just as the champion of South West Zone, Adeyinka Olayinka, was also talking tough.

According to Isife, “I have been at Otukpo since Monday training ahead of the tournament, because I want to win the trophy without complaints.”

In the same vein, Olayinyka said, “I know it is going to be a tough competition, because of the caliber of the players. But, I’m sure of myself. I’ll win the championship.”

The championship has the support of the Royal and Ancient (R&A) Golf of St Andrews, Scotland, the world body responsible for the rules and development of the game of golf.

Dignitaries expected at the occasion include the Governor of Benue State, Chief (Dr.) Samuel Ortom, the Director General, National Sports Commission (N.S.C.), Alhassan Yakmut, the former Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator, David Mark, among others.
