Senators on Tuesday in Abuja resumed for the week, lamenting Friday’s invasion of the homes of senior judges in the country, following which seven including two Supreme Court justices were humiliated and thereafter detained.

The Senators while expressing support for President Muhammadu Buhari’s war against corruption, argued that such must be fought within the confines of the law, while putting the country’s image into consideration. The doctrine of separation of power, they said must always be strictly observed.

?The matter was raised on a point of order by Senator Joshua Lidani, who decried the unlawful arrests of the judges across the country by officials of the Department of State Security.

Seconding the motion, Sen Dino Melaye said: “It is absurd for the (DSS)? to operate outside of their mandate.

“These are not allegations of rape, terrorism or crime. They are allegations of professional misconduct. I acknowledge the existence of corruption in the judiciary, but the DSS overstepped and abused their boundaries,” Melaye stressed

?The Senators insisted that there is no rationale for the action of the DSS.

The matter was referred to the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights ?and Legal Matters, which is to submits its report in four weeks.

While also agreeing that the judiciary be sanitized, Senate President Bukola Saraki condemned the unlawful mode of arrest, insisting that “any anti-corruption action that goes against the rule of law does not help the fight against corruption.”
