Mutiu Adepoju, ex-international, has called on the management of Enyimba FC to do more if the team is to do well in the CAF Champions League.
He made the call against the backdrop of the team qualifying for the lucrative group stage of the CAF Champions League on Wednesday. Enyimba beat Etoile du Sahel 4-3 on penalties after the two legged qualifying matches ended 3-3.
According to him, the journey has just begun for the two-time African champions, urging the players to up their games if they hope to win the trophy.
“To me, Enyimba was destined to qualify for the group stage; otherwise it would have lost the game. The players allowed Etoile to dictate the pace of the game and surrendered everything to them. I didn’t watch it but I have read about the match.
“Besides, their experience in the Champions League should be able to see them through at the group stage, but sincerely, the real work has just started because we still have some of the big team in Africa in the championship,” he said.
Enyimba surrendered a three-goal first leg lead to capitulate 0-3 in Sousse. The Nigerian champions later won 4-3 on penalties, with goalkeeper, Theophilous Afelokhai, being the match hero.
The draw for the group stage will come up on May 24 in Egypt. Enyimba won the championship in 2003 and 2004. It also last qualified for the group stage in 2011.
