Lagos – Remi Johnson, a former Vice President of the Lady Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) South West Zone, has emphasised the need for sponsors of junior championships to extend scholarship grants through the duration of the beneficiary’s academic programme.
“It doesn’t make sense to me that scholarship should be given to a child for one or two year; what about the remaining years, who will complete it for the child? I believed that it should cover the period the child will spend in school whether primary or secondary,” she said.
In an exclusive chat with Independent recently in Lagos, Johnson who is a member of LGAN West Zone’s board, expressed worry that the future of the game would be in danger if the upcoming players were not educated.
While calling for a revolution to enhance the academic status of the women golfers, shesaid, “A lot of our women are not well educated and that deficiency has been affecting their growth in the game.”
Against this backdrop she said, “This is the reason all hands must be on deck in collaboration with LGAN to develop the younger ones now; if anybody is promising scholarship, let it be total; the young ones are the future of tomorrow.”
Concluding, she commended Ikoyi Club 1938 (Golf Section) for the discovery of Tokunbo Pedro, Anita Uwadia, and George Oboh, who are presently playing and schooling in abroad.
