Out-going President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, was conspicuously absent at the 2015 May Day rally in Abuja, in which workers drawn from the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC) trooped out en mass to observe.

Although no reason was given for the president’s absence at the event, feelers have emerged that it may not be unconnected with the leadership crisis rocking the NLC.

Nigerians workers anticipated that the May Day event held at the Eagle Sqaure would have served as an opportunity for President Jonathan to give them some parting words, as they have stood by him for the past six years he has handled state affairs.

This would mark the first time the President would be absent from the Workers’ Day celebration since his election in 2011.

The President was represented at the event by Minister of Labour and Productivity, Senator Joel Ikenya.

The minister’s presentation, however, shows that  the Presidency did not prepare any speech to be read on his behalf. The speech he read and claimed to be on behalf of the President was later withdrawn by his aides and not made available to journalists.
