President Goodluck Jonathan has condoled with the government and people of Zamfara State on the death of the highly revered Emir of Gusau, Muhammad Kabir Dan Baba, on Thursday.

This is even as the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebu Ode, Chief Bayo Kuku, also died on Thursday and will be buried today in his Ijebu Ode home. He died after a protracted battle with undisclosed illness.

Though details of his death were still sketchy, a close family source confirmed that the chief has passed on.

While he excelled in academics and business, Kuku, a multi-faceted tycoon, served as chairman on the board of many blue chip companies

Notable among them are Mobile Producing Nigeria Limited and Nigeria Stock Exchange (NSE) to mention a few.

Meanwhile, the late Emir of Gusau was one of the longest serving traditional rulers in Nigeria, having been appointed District Head of Gusau in 1984 before being upgraded to second class Emir in 1997 and first class Emir three years later.

The President was honoured by the Emir with the traditional title of Garkuwan Manoman Zamfara (Protector of Farmers in Zamfara) during his visit to Gusau on January 19 this year.

An Aso Rock statement said hours, after the death was announced, that the late Emir would be greatly missed by the people of Gusau whom he ruled with great wisdom and understanding for more than thirty years.

“As they mourn and lay their just, fair-minded, pious, courageous and benevolent patriarch and Emir to rest, President Jonathan urges members of his family and the people of Gusau to also give thanks to Almighty Allah for Alhaji Muhammad’s long and very fulfilled life of exemplary service to his people and country.

“The President prays that Almighty Allah will grant Alhaji Muhammad eternal rest and bless the people of Gusau with a worthy successor to the late Emir who will build on the commendable legacies of progress and development”, said the statement issued by presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati.
