Former Senate Chief Whip and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Kanti Bello, has commended the Senate for rejecting the N5,000 stipend promised by the ruling APC for unemployed youths in the country.
Speaking in a chat with Daily Independent, Bello who represented Katsina North Senatorial District between 2003 and 2011 said rather than dole out money to unemployed youths, the federal government should make job creation its focus.
According to him, the country’s economy cannot witness significant improvement if the populace, especially the youths are not fully engaged but only depend on monthly stipend from the government.
” I am happy when the senators rejected the N5,000 stipend for unemployed youths because a country cannot operate that way. How can you just dole out money to people without work? It doesn’t make sense. Let the government do serious public works. Let it Create an enabling environment for people to work”.
“I am not an economist but a civil engineer. We all know what is required to improve the economy and that is the fact that people have to work. The government must create an environment where people will be able to work. If the population is not working, there is no way the economy can improve” he said.
