Abuja – The House of Representatives, on Wednesday, urged the Federal Ministry of Interior to begin the installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras and other surveillance devices in prison formations across the country.

In the resolution arising from a motion on notice brought by Hon. Anayo Nnebe (PDP, Anambra), which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote, the House also urged the Interior Ministry to reconstruct and re-enforce prison perimeter fences.

Moving the motion, Nnebe expressed concern over the increasing rate of jail breaks in some prisons in parts of the country, especially the recent incidents in Koton Karfi, Ekiti and Kuje prisons.

He further stressed that such ugly incidents posed danger to national security and public safety, given the fact that the nation’s prison facilities lacked monitoring devices.

Hon. Nnebe therefore, urged the House to prevail on the interior ministry to take necessary steps to avert any would-be major incidents capable of endangering the safety and security of the public, adding that the trend must not be allowed to continue.

The House, presided over by Speaker Yakubu Dogara, therefore mandated the committee on Interior to monitor development and report back the level of compliance for further action.
