The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Worldwide, has opposed the setting up of a committee by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to probe all employments and promotions at the agency under its immediate past director-general, Patrick Akpobolokemi.

The IYC said the setting up of the panel, which would review all such appointments and promotions from 2010, was another subtle method adopted by President Muhammadu Buhari to rubbish his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan.

Reports credited to NIMASA’s Head of Public Relations, Lami Tumaka, had quoted him as saying that the panel was constituted at the instance of the Federal Ministry of Transport to ascertain compliance with civil service rules and federal character principle on issues of appointments and promotions at the agency during the period under review.

But the IYC, in a statement by its spokesman, Eric Omare, at the weekend, rejected the setting up of the panel, insisting that the exercise had a sinister motive to disgrace Jonathan.

It also stated that the exercise was a suspicious plot designed to further victimize Niger Deltans in the agency.

The apex Ijaw youth body said that it would not be surprised if Niger Deltans working and holding various positions at NIMASA were unjustly sacked or demoted at the end of the committee’s task.

He said: “The period under review, it would interest the public to know, was the period Niger Delta-born Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi was the Director-General of the agency.

“The IYC states without hesitation that this is an obvious attempt and a continuation of the victimization of Niger Deltans in the affairs of NIMASA.”

Nigeria has never be one and it cannot be one for ever no matter the amendment being carried out from time to time . If the atrocity under their son -Akpobolokemi has been under another tribe , IYC would certainly be the first to make a loud noise to high heaven . Has IYC bothered to establish how their son personalized NIMASA and his recruitment was in total disregard to lay down rules and regulations . It is more civilized for IYC to get first hand facts on recruitment during Akpobolokemi before resulting to opposition at all.
