The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has congratulated the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party and incumbent Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake  Dickson, on his re-election at the just-concluded governorship election in the state.

In a statement by its spokesman, Eric Omare, the IYC also commended all governorship candidates and the people of the state for their contributions towards deepening democracy.

It noted that the people did well by insisting that their votes counted and determined who would emerge winner of the poll.

The apex Ijaw youth body however expressed sadness over the cases of deaths that characterised the poll, stressing that “so many lives were lost during the electoral process”.

“Election of a governor ought not to be a do-or-die affair especially in a state such as Bayelsa that is homogenous.

“The IYC recalls that under President Jonathan, sanity was restored to the electoral process in Nigeria and the do-or-die spirit which was prevalent under President Obasanajo was banished to the dustbin”, IYC said.

It expressed regrets that that the country’s  democracy had retrogressed again to the do-or-die era.

“The IYC strongly feel that this degeneration is as a result of lack of statesmanship by President Buhari who failed to give express instruction to the security agencies to protect lives and maintain law and order”, IYC said.

IYC called on the relevant security agencies to carry out a detailed and transparent investigation into the cases of deaths and violence during the election and bring perpetrators to justice to serve as deterrent to others.

“The killers of innocent Ijaw people, especially the Ijaw youths, must not go unpunished.

“We also call on Governor Dickson to extend hands of friendship to other contestants, Bayelsans and Ijaw people in general so as to move the state and Ijaw nation forward now that the elections are over”, it added.
