The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) has called on the Federal Government to decentralise the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for efficiency, productivity and better management of resources.

President of the IYC, Udengs Eradiri, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Yenagoa on Tuesday.

He stressed that the current centralised management system at the NDDC was inimical to the proper development of the communities in the region.

Eradiri suggested that the commission should be decentralized to empower the states within the development agency’s jurisdiction according to their oil-production quota.

“The NDDC should be decentralized to the states. This one everybody is coming to the centre has destroyed the NDDC.

“When they (states) get their budget, it should be according to your (oil) production quota. So, when the money is coming,it would also be shared according to your production quota and so projects in your states must be in line with your production quota.

“If you are destroying your pipeline and you are not producing, it is your projects that will reduce. In that way, you will see that the states will begin to protect facilities to optimize  production”, he said.

He also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the appointment of former Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Ibim Semenitari, as acting Managing Director of the NDDC.

Eradiri noted that Semenitari’s appointment was the beginning of the re-organisation of the commission if Buhari’s aim was to restructure the agency.

He observed that the biggest problem of the Niger Delta was the fact that the NDDC had since become a conduit-pipe for diversion of funds meant for development purposes.

The Ijaw youth leader urged Buhari to ensure that the NDDC was no longer used by some persons for political battles as it was counter-productive.

Eradiri also advised the acting Managing Director to sanitize the NDDC with a view to bringing about its proper management to achieve set objectives.
