Hon. Jude Ise Idehen, a golfer and former Edo State House of Assembly member, has decried the poor funding of golf in the country as he emphasised that stakeholders and well-meaning Nigerians must assist government to enable the game get to the public.
Speaking recently at an NGF Junior Masters event which held at the Smokin Hill Golf Club, Ilara-Mokin, Akure, Ondo State, Ise-Idehen was of the opinion that golf is an expensive sport that demands collective efforts to develop noting that the game is underfunded.
“It is a fact that cannot be disputed, golf is not a cheap sport; it is very expensive. So, there is need for us to look beyond government if the game must get to the public domain. There must be a collective effort, a synergy among stakeholders for a meaningful development to take place,” he said.
Corroborating the position of Ise-Idehen, a business mogul, Charles Uwadia, posited that the need to assist the up-coming golfers to attain their career dream cannot be over emphasised as many of the fantastic upcoming players are from poor background.
In his words, “There are lots of kids out there who are interested in playing golf, but looking at their faces one can tell that they seriously need help. Many of them are very good, but they are from poor homes. So, Nigerians that have the wherewithal must rise up to the challenges to help these interested kids to grow in golf.”
