The out-going government of President Goodluck Jonathan cannot foist Obasi Lawson on members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigerian (IPMAN), its President, Chinedu Okoronkwo has declared.

Okoronkwo also declared that the one-year old leadership crisis rocking the association has no effect on the current fuel scarcity ravaging the country, as products are allocated to individual marketers at the depot and not to IPMAN as a group.

Okoronkwo told newsmen in Abuja on Thursday that IPMAN is not a trade union but a body of private businessmen registered under the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) whose leadership could not be imposed on members by the government.

It faulted claims by the faction led by Obasi Lawson that it has received federal government backing through a letter purportedly written by the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Joel Ikenya, insisting that Lawson “is not the President of IPMAN and has never been so, at least in the eyes of the law, members of IPMAN, and a cross section of the public”.

He explained: “IPMAN is a duly registered association of corporate organisations who work together for the common purpose of promoting a stress-free access to petroleum products by all Nigerians, in accordance with the constitution they adopted for themselves”.
