Nigeria was on Wednesday awarded the Beijing Olympics Women’s 4x100m silver medal by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), after Russia was stripped of the gold.

Russia was stripped of the gold after one of the runners, Yulia Chermoshanskaya, tested positive for a banned substance in a reanalysis of her sample. The IOC subsequently disqualified her for testing positive for steroid use.

Russia relay teammates at the Games were Aleksandra Fedoriva, Yulia Gushchina and Yevgeniya Polyakova.

Nigeria had won the bronze at the Games with Belgium winning the silver. Belgium has been awarded the gold with Brazil that placed fourth awarded the bronze.

Nigeria’s quartet of Franca Idoko, Gloria Kemasuode, Halimat Ismaila and Oludamola Osayomi ran the race and placed second in 43.08secs.

“The Russian Federation team is disqualified from the women’s 4x100m relay. The corresponding medals and diplomas are withdrawn and shall be returned,” IOC said.

The IOC stores samples for a decade to test with newer methods or for new substances and conducted targeted retests ahead of the Rio Olympics.

A total of 98 samples were positive in reanalysis of samples from both the Beijing Games and the 2012 London Olympics.
