Bauchi – The Bauchi State Commissioner For Education, Eng Nuhu Gidado has disclosed that the large influx of internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by insurgents activities into the state has had adverse effect on educational facilities in the state.

Gidado disclosed this on Thursday in Bauchi during the Northern Education  Initiative (NEI)  Plus State Level One Work Plan Workshop, organised by USAID Nigeria in collaboration with State Ministry of Education.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Nasiru Mohammed Yelwa, the Commissioner said, the “North East sub region has witnessed massive destruction especially of educational facilities. Any intervention no matter how small , he said is highly welcome.

“Bauchi was relatively peaceful but the aftermath, the effect was visible, because of the large influx of people from neighboring Maiduguri even Plateau, Yobe and Adamawa, affected Bauchi directly and indirectly

He expressed confidence that the recent launching of NEI plus which is an offshoot of NEI which terminated last year will adress the problems education in the state saying the project is timely and well designed.

On how NEI plus will address educational backwardness in the state, the Commissioner said ” it will be a very progressive thinking because this particular project is centered on access and reading culture that we are lacking.

“We want to catch the children young, at their younger age, at their prime called critical learning period. It is a well directed program of action” he said.

He assured the commitment of the sate government towards NEI plus adding “the large share of 2016 appropriation budget is on education and right now, Governor Abubakar has constituted a high-powerd committee to reposition and to overhaul the education sector. So if there is any sector needing attention in Bauchi state, it’s education,” he said.
